Taxonomy in the Real World: NASA Taxonomy Site

Quite by accident I came across a great reference site that actually provides a framework for taxonomy development. It is the NASA taxonomy site.

This site is a quick overview and tutorial covering:

  1. NASA Taxonomy - Top Level Facets
  2. FAQ
    • Introduction
    • How to Use This Site
    • Taxonomy Overview
    • Training Materials (Two docs are linked in below)
  3. NASA Taxonomy - Metadata
  4. NASA Taxonomy XML Files (This is a      treasure trove of XML files that serve as deliverable templates as well.)
  5. Discussion of NASA’s use of SKOS (Simple Knowledge      Organizing System)

I found two of the many reference sources to be especially interesting

  1. NASA Taxonomy Presentation
  2. Implementing the NASA Taxonomy Through Service Oriented Architectures

Launch a research mission into this site, but don’t get spaced out.
